Tuesday 4th May 2021 Day 356
7.00 Do you ever get those days when your teenage rebel mind which still seems to lurk somewhere in the dark recesses of your brain, keeps arguing about what your ‘now mind’, has decided to do? I set my alarm last night because I knew I had a pile of stuff to do today so I was going to get up early; so when the alarm went, I switched it off and the rebel said ‘Oh stay in bed, it’s windy and cold out there, forget the gardening, the admin, the housework, it’s all boring; pick up your book’ and I did and ended up staying in bed another three quarters of an hour.
12.30 The teenage rebel has won hands down which is probably why everything I tried to do this morning seems to have gone wrong and has felt like a mountain to climb. Somehow I have even managed to lose the super posh doggie ball that Audrey found in the woods the other day and presented to me like a trophy, she didn’t seem to mind reverting to the now woolly tennis ball again fortunately.
This fierce wind and cool is just relentless, I’m watching Audrey’s ears as the wind catches them and they flap like she is trying to take off. The wind is making me crotchety (is that a real word?) More trees down in the woods, perhaps this wasn’t the best place to walk today, or is that the rebel again, telling me to cut it short and go home, which I do. It’s May and I had a fire last night!
The new small development of eight houses on the site of the old Crown Hotel, two doors away from my house, is coming on apace. The Crown which lately became the home to a firm of garden landscapers, was only afforded the title of ‘Of Historic Interest’ rather than listed, which was not enough to save it from being doomed. It is surrounded by scaffolding and being taken apart piece by piece like an ancient jigsaw, the roof tiles are off now and the removal of the pan tiles on the front has revealed the defiant old signs painted in gold, now imprisoned behind the wooden latticework that the tiles were attached to.

Page and Overton’s is now a defunct brewery. The Crown too silently awaits it’s inevitable demise, taking with it years of secrets, fun and laughter.
