Finding Fungi

Friday 16th October 2020 Day 202

7.15     I am woken by fierce barking from Audrey, my first thought of course is that she has seen the heron through the kitchen door window but I can’t see anything outside.  Anyway, better get up as there is a lady coming to pick up an item I have for sale.

11.00   I am meeting Sarah at Laughton woods for a walk, so nice to go somewhere different for a change.  The woods cover a huge area and we have to find suitable parking off the narrow road that runs through the middle of them.  It’s a good walk, probably a couple of miles or so and the path we take varies between dense woods and fields.  Beside a sheep field I notice some mushroom like fungi. I went into some woods once with a mushroom expert and couldn’t believe there are so many different types of fungi which are very edible, some that looked very far from it. I take a photo of this one to look up when I get home.

We decide to walk in a large square and so having turned left, left, left, I assume when we come to a sort of junction, we will be turning left again but no Sarah insists that we turn right and lo and behold we eventually come out on the road where we have parked the cars.  My brain has told me that this cannot possibly be correct but I have been proven wrong on so many occasions that I have to concede the fact that I must have some sort of directional dyslexia.

The fungi turns out to have a very grand name, Macrolepiota procera and apparently is very edible and delicious and there is some evidence to support its use as a possible cancer drug.  You never know what you might find along the way.

I have always liked Fridays with the thought of the weekend ahead, that nice feeling of relax, although these days every day is pretty much indistinguishable from any other, the weekend, from habit, still feels different.  Tonight our little group who met in Santorini two years ago and spent a jolly weekend in Blackpool last October, will be meeting up with cocktails in a video chatroom online tonight from Scotland Wales and England.  It will be great to see everyone and remember the sea, sun, sand and the laughs and the cocktail bar that boasted 58 different cocktails which we made a pretty good effort to sample.
