Yellow Bird Orange Fish

Wednesday 21st October 2020 Day 211

7.30   Looking out of the bathroom window at the leaves all over the pond and something else in the middle, I can’t quite make out, it looks like a long orange leaf and then I realise it is a large orange carp that somehow has got itself on top of the netting.

I throw on some clothes and rush out to it, it is literally gasping it’s last but after half a minute back in the water it comes to life again and swims gracefully off.  How lucky the heron wasn’t around as it would have been a sitting duck/fish.

8.00   Looking out of the same window to make sure all is well and this time I see a bird hopping around the edge of the pond, a bird I have never seen in the garden before, long tail and yellowy green plumage, larger than a tit, smaller than a thrush.  When I look it up it turns out to be a yellow wagtail, very pretty bird that visits Britain

between April and August.  I suppose it is still here because the seasons are changing and it is still comparatively warm, I have no idea how common they are but I have certainly never seen one.  I am not really a bird person apart from the fact I like to see them flying free (I hate to see a caged bird) but one thing I have noticed this summer is large numbers of buzzards in the sky,  I’m sure you only used to see one or maybe two circling above but some people locally have seen around twenty at one time.

16.00  It is a grim day weatherwise, non-stop rain and quite windy too.  My only outing was to take some stuff up to one of the charity shops in Heathfield.  Audrey seems resigned today to not going out although we will attempt a field trip tomorrow if the weather is better.

I have done some cooking today, including meringues with my surfeit of eggs, now I must think of something to do with all the yolks, mayonnaise perhaps.

16.30   My very kind neighbour has just returned my computer to me and it is working like a dream, no more sitting here tapping on the table while I wait for it to decide to wake up and work.  If only I was so up to speed with writing about today.  It is a challenge when nothing of note has happened.
