Thursday 5th November 2020 Day 226

7.00   Remember Remember the 5th of November, when we all crowded together to watch carnival processions by torch light, stand around huge bonfires, burning effigies of Guy Fawkes, eat hot dogs and watch fabulous firework displays. How odd and alien that all sounds now.  I think if I found myself in a large gathering like that at the moment, I would suffer from enochlophobia which is not a fear of Enoch but a fear of crowds, I just looked it up.

Last night I met up with friends in Lewes. It seems that many other people had the same idea, there were a lot of people about.  We sat semi-outside at the Depot as there was live music and the big glass doors were pulled open in order for us to enjoy it, which we didn’t and would far rather have had the doors firmly closed and be able to hear ourselves speak.  We were well socially distanced but freezing cold as the temperature dropped to three degrees but it was a good evening and we put away the Covid talk in favour of some reminiscing and laughs.

11.00   I have just heard on the radio that people can continue to be furloughed until March next year, which sounds suspiciously like there will be a much longer lockdown than one month, or am I being pessimistic?

11.15  Sarah, Audrey and I are checking out the Millenium Green area in Heathfield.  The path we take is along the old railway, I had no idea it was such a big area, next to the path is a steep ravine, the terrain all looking very different from the surrounding quite flat area.  I nearly study the ravine at close hand when I trip over a tree stump and skid along to the edge on my side.  Pride hurt more than body I think.  We were going to go in one of the other directions to the old train tunnel  which goes underneath Heathfield village but we meet a lady and her dogs who tells us that there is a foul smelling mire just at the entrance and I really don’t fancy Audrey having a mud bath when she has managed to avoid any mud so far on this walk for a change.

16.00  I am going to make some green tomato chutney from the last pickings off the tomato plants yesterday, I seem to remember that they are nice fried as well but my fry up days are over. I am thinking now of that wonderful film from the early nineties ‘Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café’.
