Monday 28th September 2020 Day 188
6.45 Worry is peering into my face when I wake, in that disconcerting way she does, her large eyes living up to her name. A bit of sunshine is creeping through the curtains which is very welcome after the rather grey weekend. My groceries are coming between eight and nine so I had better get up.
8.00 The lorry with the familiar logo pulls up and a young girl who looks barely old enough to have a driving licence, brings the baskets to the door and gravely reads me the things that weren’t available on my list but I think I will survive for a week without them. She is not wearing a mask but to be fair neither am I. We have a pleasant chat while I grab up the groceries and I see I have managed to order the most enormous bottle of washing up liquid I have ever seen. I think it will last me throughout the winter and possibly the following one.
9.30 I have decided that if I am to find some way to get through this next six months, I have to put away my lazy ways (who cares if I haven’t hoovered for three days?) No one is going to see it but me. So yesterday I was very industrious, it was a murky cold grey day but I spent most of it pond cleaning, mowing the grass and making a start at tidying up the garden for the winter. We also went for a longer walk than usual. My prize was that for a change I went and sat in the lounge much earlier than usual and lit a fire which somehow felt very naughty but it .
was very nice ……. once I had switched off the perfectly adequate radiator and opened a window to reduce the stifling heat, which of course defeats the whole idea but I just like the look of a fire roaring away in the fireplace.
So, this morning after having taken in the groceries I set about making tomato chutney from my glut of tomatoes from the greenhouse. It is very tasty with a nice little spike of red chilli. In a week or two when they start to tail off, I will make green tomato chutney. All very satisfying.
It was my God daughter’s fortieth birthday this weekend just gone and she very kindly invited me to a socially distanced dinner at her house. There were just four of us and after a few glasses of bubbly and a very nice red wine, there was a great deal of laughter too. Then came the problem of blowing out the candles on the cake, probably not a good idea at this time even though the four of us haven’t exactly been out on the town over the past few months. But we found a way; cover the cake in cling film and stick the candles through it, voila!
16.15 The day has remained sunny and actually quite hot. What a difference a bit of brightness makes to everything.
