Wednesday 11th November 2020 Day 232
Armistice Day, soldiers will stand alone in uniform in their doorways, united by their memories.
8.00 I arrive downstairs earlier than usual much to Audrey’s delight, she decides my early arrival in the kitchen must have evolved from a desire to scratch her tummy as she lays prostrate in front of me on her back grinning. Oddly that was not the sole purpose of my early start, in fact I have several things to do today and tummy scratching isn’t one of them so she has to make do with the new type biscuits I have bought her for her breakfast.
9.20 I get my coat and trainers on and grab my wellies which I will probably need because Sarah and I are about to travel in convoy to Lewes but not to the town, we will be walking past the house she grew up in just by the downs and the old now disused race course.
9.30 We collect Sarah in her car and all set off for Lewes. I have never been to this part before and Audrey will be thrilled at another new playground.
10.15 We walk up a steep path to the top of the Downs Across a field of rapeseed in front of us, we can see for miles in all directions and a windmill in the nearer distance across the valley. The course of the old racecourse snakes away from us over the hill, defined by dark green grass. Once again a new place with amazing views near to home that I didn’t even know existed and practically devoid of people other than a couple of runners. I am glad we are not running, just walking up the long steep path is enough effort for me. Perhaps if we stopped talking for five minutes we would catch our breath!
12.15 We are home and still feeling exhilarated from the walk. Now for some cooking as I do each Wednesday at the moment for one of my daughters as her timetable is so full on a Wednesday. It feels very odd cooking for the four of them and me but is getting me back into enjoying it as well. Today I am making a chicken and leek pie. I am still not getting the quantities right and apparently last week’s Lasagne lasted them for two nights. I don’t think I have done too much better today, I have made so much filling that I have to make more pastry .
Tonight the virtual choir restarts, I have music scores to download. It will be nice to see everyone again and catch up a bit. I would be feeling more nervous if it weren’t for the fact that we have to mute our singing because of time delays and it all gets put together once we have learned the songs.
